Leading parties

Ghana has a two-party system, which means that there are two dominant political parties (the National Democratic Congress and the New Patriotic Party), with extreme difficulty for anybody to achieve electoral success under the banner of any other party.

National Democratic Congress (Ghana)

National Democratic Congress - Official Website

The National Democratic Congress is a social democratic political party in Ghana, founded by Jerry John Rawlings, who was Head of State of Ghana from 1981 to 1993 and the President of Ghana from 1993 to 2001. The NDC was formed ahead of elections in 1992 and in 1996 returned Rawlings to power. Rawlings' second term ended in 2001. The NDC lost the presidency in the 2000 election, and it was not until the 2008 election that they regained it with candidate John Atta Mills.
The NDC's party symbol is an umbrella with an eagle's head on top. Party colors are red, white, green, and black.
Internationally, the NDC is a member of the Socialist International.
On 9 December 2012, the Electoral Commission of Ghana announced NDC's candidate John Dramani Mahama president-elect after a hotly contested race in which he won 50.7% of votes cast

John Dramani Mahama
My wife, the First Lady, has sent out a message to all Ghanaian Mothers. The full message is below.

As we celebrate yet another Mothers’ Day, there will be various gatherings both at home and elsewhere to honour and celebrate mothers for their hard work, love and dedication to their children.
Some other Ghanaians will be honouring persons who are not their biological mothers, but who have filled the all-important role of a mother in their lives.
Mothers are the homemakers. Mothers inspire us. They work hard and make lots of sacrifices to protect us their children and give us the opportunity to dream big about the future while helping us realize our ambitions.
However old we are, our mothers deserve our gratitude and appreciation for their selfless and unconditional love. Mothers are the sweetest gift from God to us. There is no way we can ever really thank our mothers for all they continue to do for us.
We must continue to remind ourselves of the various sacrifices they make, and keep them in our prayers while also celebrating them. We must reciprocate by respecting and show love to our mothers. It is their day today. Let us celebrate them.
As a mother, I know the challenges and rewards of being both a mentor and a friend to my children. I am especially mindful of the exceptional commitment of single mothers, and mothers with special needs.
I salute all mothers today and I pray that you are able to celebrate with the mothers in your life.
Happy Mothers’ Day!
H.E. Lordina Dramani Mahama
First Lady of the Republic of Ghana

New Patriotic Party

The New Patriotic Party (NPP) is a liberal democratic and liberal conservative party in Ghana and one of two dominant parties in Ghanaian politics. The party is center-right, its leading rival being the National Democratic Congress (NDC). It supplied former president John Agyekum Kufuor. At the elections, held on 7 December 2004, the party won 129 out of 230 seats. The NPP candidate was John Kufuor, who was re-elected president with 52.75% of the vote. The party symbol is the elephant and the party colors are red, white, and blue.
In Ghanaian general election, 2008,the NPP candidate Nana Akuffo-Addo lost the presidential election in a closely contested runoff, with Akuffo-Addo receiving 49.77% of the votes, versus 50.23% for John Atta Mills, the NDC flag bearer.
In the Ghanaian general election, 2012, the party faced a similar situation. Akuffo-Addo lost the election with 47.74% of the vote, while incumbent President of Ghana John Mahama won 50.7%. The party is currently contesting the Ghanaian general election, 2012
